News Article: The Next ‘It’ Diet? Not Trying to Lose Weight in WSJ (Link)
What it made clear –
- More and more people realize that dieting not only fails to help most people manage weight in the long run but may also increase health risks
- People want alternative ways to manage weight
What wasn’t made as clear –
- It covers two separate movements but writes about them as if they are the same
- Movement #1 – the anti-diet movement where people aim to lose/manage weight without dieting. “Intuitive Eating” is featured as its main representation
- Movement #2 – a movement that promotes removal of weight as an indicator of health
What is my take-away –
- More power to people that ditch dieting for weight management
- “Intuitive Eating” resonates well with 19-24’s approach. “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” seems like a really nice book. For starters, you can find its Forward and Introduction parts available free online.
- People that don’t want to track weight should know that ignoring a problem does not make it go away. Same is with weight.
