The Next ‘It’ Diet?

News Article: The Next ‘It’ Diet?  Not Trying to Lose Weight in WSJ (Link)

What it made clear –

  • More and more people realize that dieting not only fails to help most people manage weight in the long run but may also increase health risks
  • People want alternative ways to manage weight

What wasn’t made as clear –

  • It covers two separate movements but writes about them as if they are the same
  • Movement #1 – the anti-diet movement where people aim to lose/manage weight without dieting.  “Intuitive Eating” is featured as its main representation
  • Movement #2 – a movement that promotes removal of weight as an indicator of health

What is my take-away –

  • More power to people that ditch dieting for weight management
  • “Intuitive Eating” resonates well with 19-24’s approach.  “Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” seems like a really nice book.  For starters, you can find its Forward and Introduction parts available free online.
  • People that don’t want to track weight should know that ignoring a problem does not make it go away.  Same is with weight.
